Event was priceless, new beginning

I was disappointed at The Gazette's coverage of Colorado Springs Together, and the event that marked the anniversary of the Waldo Canyon fire. The story did not describe the neighborhood's hard work in planning and staging an event of that magnitude, but instead referred to the cost of the event alone. The article insinuated that the event was paid for out of general funds donated to Colorado Springs Together. Nothing could be further from the truth. Bob Cutter and his team were very supportive of the event and worked diligently to secure five major corporate sponsors whose donations were specifically directed to cover the cost of the event.

From the time the fire was contained and we were allowed back into our neighborhood, we wanted to put together an event one year after the fire to thank the first responders who worked to save so many homes in Mountain Shadows and to remember the loss of Bill and Barbara Everett who perished in the fire. The anniversary event was the product of neighborhood volunteers working out the numerous details of such a major program but would not have taken place with out the support of Cutter, the Colorado Springs Together team, and our generous sponsors.

The anniversary event may have been costly, but to the people who attended, including thousands of Colorado Springs and Mountain Shadows residents, first responders from across the state, the Everett family, not to mention the many Black Forest families in attendance, the event was priceless and marked a new beginning for us all.
